The “Where’s my Amended Refund?” tool provides the status of Form 1040X Amended Tax Return for the current year and up to three prior years. where is my amended tax return? IRS Amended Return Status

You can generally expect your amended tax return to be processed up to 16 weeks from the date we receive it. It can take up to three weeks from the date you mailed it to show up in our system.

Please Note: You will not be able to access certain amended returns using this application.

IRS telephone assistors will not be able to provide additional information while your amended return moves through processing.

There is no need to call our toll-free number unless “Where’s My Amended Return?” specifically indicates that you should call.

The IRS has added an online tool to their website that help taxpayers and registered agents to track the status of their amended refunds for the 2016 and up to three prior years.  The new IRS look-up tool called IRS Where’s My Amended Return can be used approximately 3 weeks after the amended tax return has been mailed to:
  • Confirm that the IRS has received the amended federal tax return
  • Check on the processing status of the amended federal tax return
  • Get an estimated completion time for the processing of your federal tax return
To use the IRS Where’s My Amended Return tool, the taxpayer must enter their social security number, date of birth and zip code used to file their most recent federal tax return.  If amended returns for multiple years have been filed, each tax return can be selected from the results.  The refund status of an amended tax refund can also be determined approximately 3 weeks after it has been mailed by calling the IRS Where’s My Amended Refund Phone Number 866-464-2050.

When is Where’s My Amended Refund Available?

“Where’s My Amended Refund?” is available almost all of the time. However, the IRS Where’s My Return system is not available every Monday, early, from 12:00 am (Midnight) to 3:00 am Eastern Time.
Also, occasionally the IRS Where’s My Return System may be unavailable on Sundays between 1:00 am and 7:00 am Eastern Time.
